This Manitou Springs project was both a challenge and a delight. The home is perched on a lot that provides panoramic views, but the entry and landscape did not add to the function or curb appeal of the property.
Accent originally renovated the front yard of the home to include retaining wall replacement, plantings, and lighting. The following year, we began the process re-designing the front walk and drive to enhance the entry to the home. Our client’s office was in the front room with a window facing out to this space. Our goals included creating a spot to enjoy the views, creating a focal point for enjoyment from the office, as well as provide space for gardening.
The largest challenges were the substantial grade change, as well as limited space due to proximity to the property line. After much thought, we decided to begin the walkway/patio at grade, build retaining to about four feet in height, then transition seamlessly to a raised deck, with all surfaces made from decorative concrete. To provide a sense of enclosure for gardening and to contain the household pet, we designed and built a railing/wall that complemented the architecture of the home while still allowing an open feel for views.
Once construction of the retaining walls, deck, and concrete were complete, we chose and installed plantings and lighting to enhance the property. The finishing touch was a water feature that provided beauty, movement, and a pleasant sound to the landscape.
Our client reports that the space is used and enjoyed daily. Please feel free to contact us if we can be of service to transform a challenging space.
